Finding Your Edge

Have you heard the cue “find your edge” or “play your edge” in a yoga class and wondered, “huh?” You’re not alone! And it’s okay, I’m here to help clarify the concept of “edge” so you can feel confident in your practice and in yourself.

Edge is the point in the pose when you are mentally and physically engaged AND able to find balance and ease. It’s a bit past your comfort zone but not in your danger zone. You don’t want to experience pain (which can lead to injury – safety first) but you do want to experience a calm challenge.

In a yin yoga class you hold poses for several minutes. To maintain calm challenge in a seated forward fold for example (these poses are particularly challenging for me), you have the option to soften" into the pose over time. Come to the first place that you experience sensation and hold there. That is your first edge. After a minute, you might feel your body invite you to move deeper into the pose or you may feel like it would feel great to continue holding where you are. You may even feel it’s better to ease back and bend your knees to find the right amount of tension for you and your body in that moment.

An analogy many teachers like to use is the story of Goldilocks and the three bears. Goldilocks is always looking for the feeling that is “just right”. Not too hard and not too soft. Not too hot and not too cold.

The key in finding your edge is to listen to your body and let it guide you.
